The play’s masterful combination of lyricism, suspense, and dramatic changes of mood is dramatized by an energetic cast that stars Adetomiwa Edun—called “a Romeo to die for” by The Independent (London)—and, in her stage debut as Juliet, Ellie Kendrick. This talkie is the only film costarring Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. In addition, this print of the 1966 rerelease—the only version Pickford allowed after her 1933 retirement—features new music and sound effects added by Marty Kemp of the Mary Pickford Company during his painstaking restoration of the film. With seven minutes of extraneous footage removed in pieces to tighten the editing and new rerecording techniques to improve the sound quality of voices, the brilliance of the 1929 original is here brilliantly revived.

From the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, this production of Shakespeare’s rollicking classic battle of the sexes stars Len Cariou as Petruchio, the strutting male chauvinist suitor who sets out to undermine the spirit of young Katharina. Taped before a live audience, this production is treated in a solidly traditional fashion by British stage director Peter Dews, retaining the integrity of Shakespeare’s original text.

This beguiling tale of ship-wrecked tars, dastardly Dukes, airy spirits and the plight of lovers, all under the thrall of a master magician, floats across the screen in this lively and colourful production performed by students from the Red Maids School.
